Two Your Health

April 12, 2015

It was a gala evening dinner with a two fold purpose: a fund-raiser for the Children`s Hospital and a `roast` of two of its favorite doctors. As in past years, we were the band greeting the throng who came for a wholesome meal and an evening of affectionate comedy. Half way through the gig, the band posed with the Hospital`s mascot “TJ the Tiger” while hungry well-wishers took a couple of photographs.1 roast 2015

As the milling crowd found their seats for a delectable and  low-cal repast, an audience member admired the healthy menu and joked with us, ” What kind of music are you guys playing, anyways?” With gentle wink, one of our pickers replied, “First, we are a free range  acoustic band. Secondly, we play only naturally processed Bluegrass music allowing 2 feet of space between musicians when we perform.”  The listener looked up from the festive dinner program distractedly and politely mused, “Too sweet.” We all chuckled warmly, and the band soon decamped to a nearby Mexican restaurant for our yearly family dinner.

The food was a little too hot, but that`s kind of the  way we like it.

Ring out the old, pickin` the New…….Year

January 1, 2015

Bluegrass musicians from Eldon and Jefferson City trekked to the Broadway Brewery in Columbia recently to wrap-up the  calendar year and celebrate our fifth anniversary of Sunday jams at the local brewpub hosted by the BRC founder’s band. All tips have been given to benefit our nearby Children`s Hospital, and patrons have generously donated over $6.7K to the Children`s Miracle Network since we first stepped onto the pub`s bandstand in  late 2009.

BB2014-15

With the arrival of 2015,  Gainor & Friends  heartfully thanks the microbrewery`s gracious  management, and especially Kenny Duzan,  for the community spirit to give us a weekly venue to continue our perennial support of medical care for needy children in central Missouri,  as we have done since 1995. It`s the Bluegrass Way, folks.

For so many years of faithful and fun-filled performance, the BRC founder says `thank-you` to these splendid and talented musicians. Could anything be more fun than to pick and grin with these guys on a Sunday afternoon?

Motorcycles rock, but Bluegrass rules….

July 15, 2014

It was a muggy, sweltering day for the 10th Annual Harley Davidson dealership street fest to benefit the Children`s Hospital, and “TJ” the hospital mascot was on-site at the biker shop (click to enlarge). IMG_3620

Regular yearly performers for the last decade, the BRC founder`s band entertained the attendees while Miss Teen contest winners from local county fairs donned their tiaras to greet and mingle with the kids and families. IMG_3612 - Version 2

Under a blazing July sun, temperatures climbed to almost triple digits in the afternoon, but  Gainor & Friends finished their gig by mid day in the shade of a vintage fire truck festooned with Mizzou Tigers flags from the nearby University campus.

It was a fun time with much audience response from the festival goers. Two days later, fog and thunderstorms swept over Missouri with temperatures falling into the low 50`s. Mark Twain reportedly mused, “Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.”

P.S. Check-out the BRC “Peace Dove”  banjo on eBay July 20-27 (sold). Upon receipt of the banjo, the buyer e-mailed, “Wow!!!!!…So happy!”

The future of Bluegrass…..?

June 17, 2014

If youngsters do not pick-up the banner of Bluegrass, the music will die with us old timers.  The Gainor &  Friends  band recently performed again for the Safe Day for Kids festival at the Children`s Hospital, and we were blessed to have a young fiddler join us- for the third time. Her father is a banjo player and tinkerer not unlike the BRC founder.IMG_3583 - Version 2

Although a little camera shy, the young fiddler is unafraid to seamlessly leap into such Bluegrass classics like “Redwing” and the “Tennessee Waltz.”  She surprised  the  group  with a spirited up-tempo “Devil`s Dream” with which some of our veteran musicians could not keep pace.

At the end of a sunny morning, we all took great comfort in the assurance that the future of Bluegrass is safe in the hands, fingers, heart, and soul of this little miss (click to enlarge).

P.S. Special thanks always to our musicians who travel from Eldon and Macon, Missouri, to  perform in Columbia with the G&F band  at these events for the kids and families.

Our 2 best fans ever

April 11, 2014

The BRC founder`s band performed again this year at the annual gala dinner to benefit the Children`s Hospital.  It was a festive evening with many well-wishers and photographs, but the highlight for the musicians was getting to see our two best fans ever. These two little ladies both have hair the color of sunshine and bring us smiles and laughter.

Our other little favorite left us joyfully speechless when she arrived with a wash-off tattoo on her forearm announcing “I`m with the Band.”A`s arm tatto - Version 2                                               How do we deserve these precious admirers?

After the gig, the band  retreated to a nearby restaurant for its annual family meal together. Just between you and me, dear reader, I am the band`s third most devoted fan. These guys donate time and musicianship  every Sunday afternoon at the brewpub where all tips go to the Children`s Hospital.IMG_3519 - Version 2

How do I deserve these precious pickers?
